Cravings for sugar are just as natural as our desire for air. Throughout years of evolution, we have been designed to seek sweet-tasting foods. Before food processing, the only source of sweet tastes was plant food: squash, roots, grains, and fruit. It is no coincidence these sweet foods are also great sources of nutrients, energy and fiber. The best way to fill these desires is to provide the body with sweetness that it needs by regularly eating naturally sweet foods.
Let’s take look at some of these naturally sweetened foods we can choose from:
- Vegetables- when cooked; corn, carrots, onions, winter squash, sweet potatoes, and tams.
- Natural sweeteners- raw honey, agave.
- Organic dark chocolate.
Through my own personal experience, I have found that depriving myself of certain desired sweets, only backlashes with time. I started buying bulk yogurt covered almonds and honey roasted pecans, when I am intensely cravings sweets, I can just eat one or two and really helps to satisfy the need for sugar. That’s not to say don’t enjoy birthday cake or ice cream, or donuts, or brownie every now and then. Just be mindful of your intake. These are just some examples for dealing with sugar cravings. Give yourself time and space to develop what works best for your mind and body for a healthy sugar consumption.
